Details of Elvis Fontenot & The Sugar Bees
Artist / Band
Details
Elvis Fontenot and the Sugar Bees were formed way back in the dim & distant past of 1992, when founder members Phil Butler and Nick Barber caught legendary UK band R Cajun & the Zydeco Brothers at a Xmas show at their local pub. Intrigued by a form of music they'd never experienced before, the duo started to search out cajun & zydeco bands and recordings. Phil had guitar lessons from the Boat Band's Greg Stephens, Nick took up bass and harmonica and along with Phil's lodger, Dave Moreman on guitar, the trio started to jam with the Boat Band's Allison Parkes. The catalyst for their live debut was Allison's imminent emigration to New Zealand. It was decided to book a room in a pub and put on a concert...it duly took place, Allison went on her way, but the others enjoyed it so much that they decided to carry on, under the name of Elvis Fontenot & the Sugar Bees, a name inspired in equal parts by Nick's haircut and the Cleveland Crochet track. 14 years later and 20-odd members later the band have gone on from strength to strength. Initially, their ambition was to play at the Wheatsheaf in Stoke-on-Trent....now they've played all over the UK and Europe and have played on three occasions across Louisiana and Texas to enthusiastic audiences, including twice at the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans. On their 2003 visit, they also discovered that their brand of music-a lively, visual take on cajun, zydeco, soul, blues and played with a ferocious energy-was best described as "Swamp'n'roll" - and that's how they've been describing themselves ever since.
