Peter Cat is a vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Glasgow, Scotland, who has been making lyrical, ornamental pop music under this moniker since 2015, while dressed like that mildly attractive supply teacher you once had for A-Level English. Peter Cat's wryly humorous, studiously crafted songs playfully cross genre boundaries, encompassing elements of angular indie rock, contemporary bedroom pop, analog synth-pop, and torch-song balladeering; all undergirded by a commanding, dramatic bass-baritone vocal recalling John Grant or Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy at their finest. Peter Cat's debut LP, ‘The Saccharine Underground’, was released in 2020 through MoFi Records, benefitting from UK-wide distribution from heavyweight Scottish label Last Night From Glasgow. Scottish arts and culture magazine The Skinny called ‘The Saccharine Underground’ “a nostalgia-inducing glam-pop romp”, while I Said Yeah! said of the record: “[it’s] a brilliant debut record. It’s a majestic record full-stop. Ten minutes ago I was laughing, five minutes ago I was crying…it’s pulled together with great panache and sounds quite unlike anything else I can put my finger on right now.” This was followed by sophomore EP ‘The Magus’, released in 2022: this release juked confidently into more leftfield sonic territory, marrying the couture pop hooks of ‘The Saccharine Underground’ with a modern musical sensibility inspired as much by Billie Eilish as by Frank Zappa. Lead single ‘Melon Dating Simulator!!’ racked up repeated transatlantic airplay on BBC Scotland from Roddy Hart, 6Music from Tom Robinson, and Amazing Radio USA; I Said Yeah! wrote that “With The Magus, Peter Cat has managed to raise an admittedly high bar even higher.” Peter Cat is touring the UK in autumn/winter ’22 with a full band and is currently both writing a second full-length LP and a two-part pop-opera.
