Details of Frontier Ruckus
Artist / Band
Details
Folk singers aren’t born, they’re shaped. If Matthew Milias had been born and reared in California, he very well could be singing sunny surf-pop tunes. It just so happens that Milias, vocalist and chief songwriter for the Americana folk band Frontier Ruckus is from Orion Township, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Milias’ songs may not be straightforward social commentary, but he’s been able to capture suburban life and the effects of a rough economy like no other since Bruce Springsteen. "We’re really not trying to write songs about economics or political songs about the downfall of America," says Milias. "I’m just trying to capture my experiences." Rolling Stone may have described them as "Gothic Americana" after they played at this year’s Bonnaroo, but Frontier Ruckus is much more. Comforting and warm, their songs feels like indie films brought to life, one part "The Graduate" and one part "Little Miss Sunshine." Like independent cinema, Frontier Ruckus relies on strong character-driven storytelling, not special effects and sexy mass marketing.
